About Us

Duncan-bc.com is the first in a series of community profiles being developed. The intent of this project is to promote the local community, the businesses serving and working in that community and the advantages of being part of the community.

The promotion is not only for the people in the area but also to the World at Large.

With this web site we hope to encourage people to utilize and frequent the home grown businesses and services available.

We do this by making people aware of the diversity of shops, products and services available. We encourage people living and working in the area to check out what is available at the local shops, to support and take advantage of these opportunities by shopping locally and thus bring a sense of community and pride of the area.

As the web site evolves, additional features such as: community events, personal notices, possibly a community news section and a forum for open discussion can be added.

Currently the web site is focused on the town of Duncan but as the site users increase some interest is now being expressed to display other attractions such as the Cowichan River Provincial Park and Gordon Bay Provincial Park, Shawnigan Lake, Cowichan Bay, Cowichan Lake and hundreds of other attractions which can keep people home for the holidays while at the same time attract visitors to the area.
The green component of this initiative is explained in the "why" section below.

It is our hope that this type of community profile will encourage interaction between the community at large, the service and business providers and develop a sense of pride for everyone living in the area.

Why?

Quite simply put, the concept is built around the phrase, “act locally but think globally”. We are not sure if that is the original way it was coined but it is appropriate for today.

It is now obvious to most people that climate change is not someone else’s responsibility but everyone’s. We now know our personal behaviour does have an impact on the world around us. What we can do to encourage local business, reduce demand on transportation and natural resources is to shop locally.

By adjusting how we shop, where we shop and how much we buy it is possible to maintain comfortable lifestyles filled with quality and care while at the same time fostering reasonable trade with developing countries that do supply the goods we need and want.

By doing this simple change we can reduce the waste and thus our personal impact on the environment.

Important note!

It is important to note that although these profiles are intended to benefit the whole community they are not a public service. The venture is a for profit exercise with a social purpose. The project is funded through advertizing and charges for services provided to profit making enterprises.

If there is a public service that is not for profit then those services can be promoted at cost or where there is no money for free.
